Earlier this month, Hulu's Jason Kilar announced that Hulu Plus would surpass one million subscribers this year. Helping bolster that number is today's long awaited release of the XBOX client that includes one free week trial for all XBOX Live users - including both Gold and Free users.
The pervasiveness of game consoles and internet connections have long made them logical choices for OTT services. In 2008, Netflix launched on XBOX and had 1 million users within 12 weeks. In 2010, it took less than a month for Wii to hit the million mark. Can Hulu hope to do the same?
Last week it was made clear that the final Hulu Plus release date had not yet been set. Given Sony's recent security issues, we wonder if XBOX is looking to leverage PSN's weakness with the timing of this update. Regardless, the free trial may have some hidden genius as consumers may have some hesitation releasing credit card data for new services.
