Digital Home Landscape Being Redefined by CE CompaniesNew Strategic Insights from DIGDIA Suggest the "New Rules" of the Digital Living Age
favor companies that invested in Key Technologies
February 8, 2004 (Dallas, Texas) - Though the digital home is a prime target of virtually every PC and consumer electronics (CE) vendor, a new report written by DIGDIA and published by The Diffusion Group suggests that CE vendors and their requisite focus on key digital entertainment technology will be the primary catalyst behind the transition to the truly digital home.
"PC players, whether hardware or software, have been a driving force behind the recent digital home movement," says Gary Sasaki, President of DIGDIA and consulting analyst with The Diffusion Group. "But while PC companies are pinning their growth on the vision of a totally networked digital home - a vision which remains foreign to the vast majority of consumers - CE leaders are using familiar platforms such as the DVD player and TV monitors to inject new technologies into the living room and the existing home entertainment center."
While a few PC vendors such as HP have introduced "living room" PCs disguised as home entertainment centers, the prices of these solutions remain well above the tolerance threshold of most consumers - often in excess of $1,500. CE vendors, on the other hand, are hoping to leverage their existing platforms to incrementally expand the consumer's vision of digital media technologies, a move which is less risky and more likely to be met with respectable consumer demand.
According to the report, the digital home market must now move from visionary hype to realistic implementations, into what Sasaki calls "2nd Gear." As this happens, says Sasaki, "the old digital home pioneers - including some blue chip names - will experience a shake-up as the old rules of engagement are shattered by a host of new companies that invested in key digital entertainment technologies." However, the transition to what Sasaki calls "the Age of Digital Living" is an act in progress and will likely be altered by the introduction of a new disruptive technology, much as the Internet shook up the PC Age.
