The Diffusion Group Announces Report Series Focused on Portable Game Console Market
TDG Offers In-Depth User Profiles of PSP, DS and GameBoy Owners,
Releases New Global Analysis of Portable Game Console Market

May 11, 2006 (Dallas, Texas) - Despite the fact that this year's E3 has been dominated by console-related announcements, new research from The Diffusion Group suggests that portable game consoles (PGCs) such as Sony's PSP and Nintendo's GameBoy Advance will be among the strongest areas of growth in the global gaming industry in the next five years. While this market is becoming increasingly important to hardware and software vendors, very little is understood about consumer usage models or how this rapidly evolving market will play out over the next few years.

"Portable game consoles were once thought of as just an interesting experiment, a way for incumbent console vendors to fill the sales gap between new hardware releases and help keep the brand in the public eye during cyclical lulls," said Michael Greeson, founder and CEO for The Diffusion Group. "Of course, with close to 100 million units sold worldwide 2001, PGCs have long since ceased playing second-fiddle to their in-home console brethren."

"PGCs have evolved from gaming-only platforms to portable multimedia powerhouses," added Greeson. "Over the next few years, they will increasingly become a substitution or replacement threat to both converged multimedia players and application-specific platforms such as digital music players."

To better understand the PGC market space, TDG commissioned both primary consumer and strategic industry research on consumer and is now publishing three separate reports relating to PGCs:

  • Understanding Portable Gamers: A Profile of Sony PSP Owners
  • Understanding Portable Gamers: A Profile of Nintendo DS and GameBoy Advance Owners
  • On the Future of Portable Game Consoles: Analysis, Forecasts & Strategic Recommendations

The first two reports, Understanding Portable Gamers, leverage TDG's recent primary research to develop a detailed profile of various PGC user segments including PSP, DS, and GameBoy Advance users.

The third report, On the Future of Portable Game Consoles, is a detailed analysis of the global PGC market, including an analysis of current competitors and products, as well as an in-depth strategic discussion of market entry options for potential players such as Microsoft, Samsung, and Apple. The report also includes TDG's forecasts for global PGC demand through 2011, including regionally-specific forecasts and analysis for North America, Europe and Asia. On the Future of Portable Game Consoles will be available on Monday, May 15 but pre-orders are currently being accepted.

These reports are available at TDG’s website or by contacting the firm at 469.287.8050.
