TDG Opinions

Question of the Week: Do you foresee standards for TV apps?

Q: Do you foresee standards in the fragmented CE device segment for TV app development?

A: While TDG supports a common platform to accelerate the growth of connected devices, the reality is that it won’t happen anytime soon. TV Manufacturers show no signs of agreeing on a standard for the delivery of application or content through their Internet enabled devices. Far from it. They seem intent on making their portals proprietary and placing themselves as the arbiter of what content and applications are available. Part of that goal, as well, is to derive revenue on the back-end of content and applications that run through these devices.

GoogleTV may emerge as a “standard” for TVs over time but the company has stumbled out the gate. We will have to wait and see if they can get back on track.

The situation is not much better in Europe. The BBCs YouView effort is delayed and TV manufacturers are pursuing the same strategy as in the US. The only country that seems to have its house in order is Japan. There all the major manufacturers support a standard TV portal called acTVila.
