When Netflix first launched as an innovative DVD-by mail subscription service in 1998, it would have been difficult to imagine 15 years later that it would pass HBO to become the largest premium TV/movie subscription service in the United States with 30 million streaming subscribers, as well as having a rapidly growing international streaming business.

Netflix is convincing proof of the potential of premium OTT video services. However, such success invites imitators, thus fueling ever-increasing competition from both native OTT providers and TV incumbents, most notably in the form of TV Everywhere and a renewed MPVD VOD platform.
